Automobile accidents can cause pain days after the incident.

Many times people come into the office with neck or back pain which started after an automobile accident.  Frequently the discomfort doesn’t start until days after the accident and the patient wonders if it is related.  Most of the time, I would answer that indeed the injuries are from the accident.

The automobile accident causes trauma but the swelling and pain takes a few days to accumulate.  Initially because of the shock of the accident, you don’t feel any pain.  But as things settle down, pain starts to rear its ugly head and symptoms begin.  Many times I see patients develop symptoms up to 2 weeks after the initial injury.

Since accidents cause pain days later, the sooner you get treated the less likely chronic pain patterns will develop.  I recommend that right after the accident to get checked out to avoid any future problems.  Even small fender benders can cause problems especially if there is minimal damage to the car.  If the car did not absorb the energy of impact, that force will be transmitted to the occupants of the car.
