What do Chiropractors treat?

The other day a patient was telling me about a problem and when I said that I would be happy to see what I could do for them, they said “I didn’t know chiropractors could treat that”.  Many people think chiropractic only takes care of the low back.  In reality we treat much more than that.  Understanding what alternative providers treat is important so you can make an informed decision as to who you want to see and for what.

Chiropractors have been trained as physicians.  To find out more about my training, go to my website at www.southingtonchiropractor.com. True, we did not go to medical school but we learned Anatomy, Physiology, Differential Diagnosis, and took classes as well in GI/GU, OBGYN, and Pharmacology.  We studied Nutrition, Radiology, Neurology, Orthopedics and of course Spinal Manipulation.  We also learned how to manipulate or “adjust” the extremities.  That includes jaws, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hands and fingers as well as hips, knees, ankles, feet and toes.  And although we did not do rounds in a hospital, we treated patients under supervision in clinics while in school.  In Connecticut, chiropractors are licensed as physicians with the rights, privileges and responsibilities there in.  To find out about chiropractic in Connecticut click on this link to the Connecticut Chiropractic Association:  www.ctchiro.com.  It is not in our scope of practice to prescribe drugs and it is actually against the “chiropractic philosophy” to do so.  We believe that the body has the ability to heal itself if the nervous system is working properly and not interfered with.  So our method of treatment is to remove any interference on the nerves and let the body’s inborn intelligence do its job.  We also understand that sometimes the damage to the body is so advanced that drugs have a place in keeping a person alive and functioning.

While there is no treatment that is totally risk free, Chiropractic care is very safe.  You may have heard stories of serious and life threatening injuries from people who have undergone Chiropractic care.  The reality is that these injuries are very rare and the media loves to sensationalize the same stories over and over.  The best way to put in perspective the risk involved with Chiropractic care is to look at the cost for malpractice coverage.  For the same amount of coverage a medical doctor would have, a Chiropractor pays around $2,000.00 per year.  Your medical doctor pays around $30 or $40,000.00 per year.  A neurosurgeon would pay over $100,000.00 or more.
