The month of October is National Chiropractic Month and I would like to educate you consumers about chiropractic and its relationship to the preservation of good health.
October, now known as National Chiropractic Month, used to be known as Spinal Health Month. The other national observance was Correct Posture Month which was celebrated in May. By combining these two, National Chiropractic Month was born. Spinal health and posture go hand in hand. During the month of October, the American Chiropractic Association will reach out to policymakers, public health groups, media officials and potential patients to highlight doctors of chiropractic as effective health care providers who are an important member of your health care team. You can link to them at www.acatoday.org.
Chiropractic, as an organized form of health care, is only 100 years old. But our roots go all the way back to Hippocrates who treated people by manipulation as well as herbs. Chiropractors have treated soldiers all the way back to the Spanish American War. In WWI, a London Chiropractor (they were also called bone setters back then) was knighted for his services to the Royal Family. GI benefits allowed veterans to study chiropractic after WWI and WWII. And recently Chiropractic is now available to veterans at the various VA hospitals around the country. Our education is very similar to medical doctors…4 years of school after a Bachelor’s degree. Lots of anatomy, physiology, x-ray, and of course years of learning how to manipulate or adjust the spine.
Chiropractic, as a member of your health care team, is very safe. While you may have heard various stories, in actuality the chance of injury is like getting hit by lightning. Malpractice insurance is minor compared to what a medical doctor or surgeon pays. And it feels good to be flexible, loose and have less stiffness. Making sure your spine if working right is like going to the dentist to make sure your teeth are healthy or having your furnace cleaned to make sure it works optimally. I would encourage all of you readers to explore Chiropractic this month even if it is by looking at our web site www.ctchiro.com. So what is it about Chiropractic that so many Americans are using it to improve their health, their sports, their enjoyment of life? Our bodies are controlled by the brain and nervous system. All of your organs, heart, intestines, stomach, liver etc. receive information from the brain which tells them what to do, how to do it and how fast to do it. That information is conducted by the nerves which are extensions of the spinal cord and pass between the spinal vertebrae. Think of a hose which if stepped on will not be able to conduct water. If the nerves are stretched, irritated or pinched, the nerves will not be able to conduct the commands from the brain and problems will occur. Those problems may show up as pain, tingling, spasm and theoretically organ problems like constipation, stomach distress, sinus problems etc. In our office, we have been able to help people with those and other problems.
